Volvo wants to make its plug-in hybrids truly hybrid

Volvo decided to face an uncomfortable but evident reality in the automotive sector: traditional plug-in hybrids, with modest ranges of 40 or 50 kilometers, were rarely plugged in. Nicole Melillo Shaw, responsible for the brand in the United Kingdom, openly acknowledged that many drivers ended up using these vehicles as conventional combustion cars, carrying extra weight and mechanical complexity without taking advantage of the environmental advantages that justified the purchase.

Faced with the slowdown in the pace of adoption of purely electric cars in key markets such as the United States, the Gothenburg automaker’s strategy is not to put the brakes on electrification, but to radically reformulate it. The brand’s solution consists of reversing the roles, transforming the battery into the main protagonist of the daily experience and relegating the combustion engine to a support role or plan B.

The first major exponent of this philosophy is the new Volvo XC70, developed on a specific platform for long-range hybrids. Equipped with a 39.6 kWh battery, the model homologates in the Chinese CLTC cycle numbers of more than 200 kilometers of electric range, which should translate into a realistic estimate of between 150 and 160 kilometers under the European WLTP standard.

With electric ranges that easily exceed the 100-kilometer mark, the user’s approach changes completely. The vehicle is now driven daily as a pure electric vehicle, recharged every night, while gasoline is reserved exclusively for long trips or last-minute unforeseen events. This transformation seeks to ensure that the brand’s hybrids really behave like electrified vehicles on a daily basis. While the company maintains its commitment to the 100% electric car in the long term — exemplified by models like the EX60 — this new generation of long-range hybrids is intended to serve as an effective and realistic bridge for today’s drivers.
