The City Hall of Rio published, on Tuesday, the decree that establishes the maximum limit of ten years of manufacture for the entry of vehicles in the city’s taxi system, in addition to a similar period for permanence in the service. The measure amends Decree 48,072, of 2020, and defines a replacement schedule based on the useful life of the cars.
The rule complies with a January decision by the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro, which suspended a municipal law allowing the circulation of taxis more than ten years old. The court considered that older vehicles have a greater risk of mechanical failures and higher emission of pollutants.

Cars manufactured between 2010 and 2014, which already operate in the city, will be able to continue in service until 2030, with last licensing in 2029. The decree establishes staggered deadlines for the other years of manufacture, until reaching the 2025 and 2026 models, which will already be fully subject to the ten-year limit of use.
Until December 31, 2026, the Municipal Department of Transportation may authorize the entry of vehicles manufactured from 2015 onwards, within the expected transition rules.
