Mercedes-Benz has presented the second update of the current generation of the GLS, the largest and most luxurious sport utility vehicle in its lineup. Originally launched in 2019, the model receives aesthetic and mechanical improvements that occur simultaneously with the changes applied to the GLE and GLE Coupé models, aligning the visual identity of the German brand.

Inside, the main evolution is in the adoption of the “Superscreen” concept, a glass structure that occupies almost the entire width of the dashboard, integrating the instrument panel and the updated MBUX multimedia center. The cabin now exhibits direct influences from the S-Class sedan, with refined finish and a new steering wheel that abandons touch-sensitive controls in favor of physical buttons, meeting criticism about the ergonomics of the previous system.

The cabin, available in five- or seven-seat configurations, also enhances comfort for rear passengers with two new 11.2-inch screens for entertainment. Externally, the changes are subtle, concentrated in a redesigned front grille, new bumpers and taillights interconnected by a light bar that highlights the star logo.

Under the hood, the engine range has been optimized to deliver more efficiency. The GLS 450 version uses the 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, now with 380 hp and 51.0 kgfm. The top-of-the-line GLS 580 features the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which delivers 537 hp and 74.4 kgfm, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. In diesel, the 350d option offers 312 hp and 66,3 kgfm.

All configurations have 4Matic all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes has confirmed that the GLS will continue without a plug-in hybrid version in this generation due to space constraints on the seven-seat platform. The model should reach global markets in the second half of this year.
