CNH Digital is valid in blitz and at airports: understand the rules and exceptions
Document valid in blitz and on domestic flight, but only within the official application; print and photo may be refused by the agent

The Digital CNH has the same legal validity as the printed version and can be presented at traffic inspections across the country — but only within the official CNH do Brasil application, formerly the Digital Traffic Card. Photos and screenshots do not have the app’s authentication mechanisms and can be declined by the agent.
The basis is in article 159 of the Brazilian Traffic Code, according to which the license can be issued in physical or digital media, has public faith and is equivalent to an identity document in the national territory. Paragraph 1-A of the same article, included by Law 14,071/2020, waives the carrying of the document when the agent is able to consult the computerized system and confirm that the driver is licensed.
What the app requires to work
The acceptance of the digital CNH as an official document depends on three conditions:
- The license must be within the validity period
- The physical CNH must have the QR code on the back, standard on roads issued from 2017 onwards
- The first access requires reading this code, checked in the national database, followed by facial validation, in which the application asks for random movements in front of the camera.
The procedure is contained in Ordinance 1.657/2018, of the then Denatran. Those who have an old copy without a QR code need a digital certificate or a new issuance. Access is made through the gov.br account, and the document, once downloaded, is available without internet.
On approach, the data displayed must correspond to the driver, and the QR code allows the agent to check category, validity and restrictions. If the cell phone breaks or discharges, the exemption from carrying continues to be valid as long as consultation of the system is possible. When none of this works, article 232 of the CTB applies: minor infraction, fine of R$ 88.38, three points and retention of the vehicle until the document is presented.
Where it counts and where it doesn’t count
The digital version is accepted when boarding domestic flights. According to Anac’s Resolution 400/2016, electronic documents are used for identification as long as they have a photo, are compatible with the data on the boarding pass and appear within the official application itself — the agency is explicit in saying that prints are not valid.
On an international flight, no. Not even in South American countries that dispense with passports and accept printed IDs, because digital documents are not admitted at border control. CNH Digital also does not protect those who have had their license expired for more than 30 days, suspended or revoked.
The application allows you to export the document in PDF with a digital signature in the ICP-Brasil standard, with legal validity guaranteed by Provisional Measure 2.200-2/2001 and without the need for notarization. This file works for banking, registration, and document submission, and can be checked through the Vio app. It does not, however, replace the display on the official app at a checkpoint or at the airport.
If the driver is fined only for not carrying the printed copy, even after presenting a valid and verifiable Digital CNH, the record of the approach can be used to contest the fine.
