The Brazilian automotive sector is going through a scenario of contrasts at the beginning of 2026. While the domestic market shows signs of vigor, with registrations totaling 355.7 thousand units in the first two months – a performance that maintains the momentum recorded in the previous year – the assembly lines have stepped on the brakes. According to data from Anfavea (National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers), national production fell 8.9% in the period, totaling 338 thousand cars.

The paradox is explained by the external sector: exports plummeted 28% in the year, with only 59.4 thousand units shipped abroad. The main obstacle is the retraction of Argentina, the historical destination of Brazilian production. “The decrease in sales to the neighboring market is a concern and directly impacts the pace of our factories,” says Igor Calvet, president of the entity.

Despite the setback in exports, the domestic balance brings encouragement. In February, the daily average of sales reached 10.3 thousand vehicles, the second best mark for the month in the last decade. The 18% growth in the car and light commercial segments helped mitigate the crisis in heavy vehicles, such as trucks and buses, which suffered a 29.4% drop in the two months.

Another highlight of the survey is the consolidation of electrified vehicles. In February, hybrid and electric models accounted for 15.9% of total sales (28,120 units). The maturity of the local industry is also evolving: 43% of these vehicles are already produced on Brazilian soil, the highest historical share. For the coming months, the sector is betting on the Move Brasil program to boost the renewal of the heavy fleet and stabilize national production.
