The Procon of Diadema (SP), in a joint operation with the Civil Police, sealed the pumps of a gas station in the city after catching one of the largest fuel adulterations recorded in the region. During the inspection, technicians found that the gasoline sold at the establishment contained 90% anhydrous ethanol — a volume more than three times higher than the maximum limit of 27% established by Brazilian legislation.

Auto Posto Car Max 2 was the target of the action after complaints from consumers. In Brazil, the mandatory blend of anhydrous ethanol in gasoline is 27%, as determined by the National Energy Policy Council and monitoring by the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels).

The delivery of a fuel with 90% alcohol instead of gasoline generates direct damage to the consumer, both financial and mechanical. Vehicles with flex technology can process the mixture, since they run even on pure alcohol. In engines powered exclusively by gasoline, the risk of breakage is immediate, since the system is not calibrated to burn a fuel with such different properties.

The occurrence was registered by the consumer crimes sector, and the establishment may suffer heavy fines and the definitive revocation of the operating registration. The episode reinforces the guidance of experts: in case of suspicion about the quality or the excessively low price, the driver has the right to demand the test tube at the time of refueling.
