Sonic debuts in May, with RS version, with an eye on the Nivus

General Motors is advancing in preparations to launch the Chevrolet Sonic, a new compact SUV derived from the Onix. The model shares a platform, mechanical assembly and much of the bodywork with the hatch and is scheduled to arrive in May, with the RS version already confirmed in the line.

The Sonic will be the brand’s main bet in the entry-level segment of SUVs, known in the market as “compacts” or A-SUVs in other regions. It will be positioned below the Chevrolet Tracker. Although, in theory, it competes for space with Volkswagen Tera, Fiat Pulse and Renault Kardian, the manufacturer indicates that it intends to place it at a higher level within the category.

With 4.22 meters in length, the model is close to the dimensions of Volkswagen Nivus and Fiat Fastback. It is about 10 cm larger than entry-level SUVs, but is still approximately 20 cm below the Fastback, which suggests an intermediate positioning — and possibly higher prices within the segment.

To make the project viable, GM invested R$ 1.2 billion, of which R$ 300 million was destined to the modernization of the plant in Gravataí (RS), where the model will be produced.

With the launch approaching, the automaker has started the final phase of validating the vehicle. For the first time, it opened its prototype assembly laboratory in São Caetano do Sul (SP), a structure that replicates a conventional production line on a reduced scale. The space is used to test bodywork, components and systems provided by partners.

At the site, it was possible to observe Sonic without camouflage. In profile, the SUV reveals its origin in the Onix, with shared windows and doors, although it has its own elements, such as moldings on the wheel arches and side skirts.

At the front, the model adopts Chevrolet’s current visual identity, with LED lighting positioned at the base of the hood, optical assembly divided into three levels and trapezoidal grille. The design follows the line of other recent launches, with an appearance closer to the Tracker and less robust than that of the Chevrolet Montana. At the rear, the reference is the Chevrolet Equinox EV, with taillights interconnected by visual elements and LED light signature.

The interior has not yet been officially announced. Under the hood, the manufacturer does not confirm specifications, but the expectation is for the use of the 1.0 turbo engine of 116 hp associated with the six-speed automatic transmission. The adoption of the 1.2 turbo engine of up to 140 hp is also considered.
