The new rules for obtaining the National Driver’s License (CNH), provided for by Resolution No. 1,020, of December 1, 2025, are already a reality in the country. This set of rules was accompanied by a new application, called CNH do Brasil, which connects all steps related to the driver’s license.

The measure of the National Traffic Council, in addition to putting an end to the mandatory nature of classes in driving schools, makes the process more accessible and flexible. It establishes: free and online theoretical course, reduction of mandatory practical classes, easier driving test, regularization of autonomous instructors, among other changes.

But one of the changes that drew the most attention was the new app, which came to replace the old Digital Transit Card (CDT). It serves both for activities, scheduling and monitoring the qualification process, as well as for carrying the document.

How the CNH do Brasil application works

The CNH do Brasil application is an official platform of the Ministry of Transport. By cell phone, the citizen can open the application, follow all the steps, take the free theoretical course and access the digital version of the license. Check out, point by point, how it works:

1. Opening the process – install the CNH do Brasil app

According to the Ministry of Transport, the first step is to download the CNH do Brasil application, available for free on the Google Play and App Store stores. If you already have the previous Digital Transit Card (CDT) application, you need to update it on the platform corresponding to your device.

When accessing for the first time, the user must sign in with their gov.br account. The system automatically identifies those who do not yet have a license and presents, within the “Driver” area, the option “Application for the First License”. Personal data is automatically retrieved from the gov.br account; Just check and confirm.

Next, the candidate must choose the desired license category, car and/or motorcycle, and the federative unit in which he will take the exams and issue his license.

2. Free theory course

With the opening of the process, the candidate can take the free theoretical course offered by the Ministry of Transport. The material is completely digital, with classes on the following topics:

  • traffic legislation,
  • defensive driving,
  • first aid,
  • notions of environmental protection.

The content is offered in multiple formats: videos, podcasts and complementary material. The candidate will also be able to take a mock exam to test their knowledge, exactly as they will be charged in the Detran test.

Upon completion of the course, the certificate is automatically issued and registered in the National Traffic System (SNT). The platform saves progress automatically and remains available for review even after it ends.

3. Consultation of the steps in the CNH do Brasil application

Throughout the process, the candidate can follow the progress of the request on the “Driver” button, which displays the completed and pending steps, such as:

  • Theoretical course;
  • Biometric collection;
  • Physical and mental fitness exams and psychological evaluation;
  • Theoretical exam;
  • Practical course in vehicle driving;
  • Vehicle driving test.
  • Updates are displayed in real time.

4. Theoretical exam

Once the training is completed, the candidate must schedule the theoretical exam at the DMV. The test contains 30 multiple-choice questions, and it is necessary to get at least 20 right to be approved. The app updates the status as soon as the result is released.

5. Practical course

After passing the theoretical exam, the practical course can be started. The candidate should consult the DMV of his state to check the available options, such as driving schools or accredited instructors. Upon completion of the training, the status is updated in the app.

6. Practical exam

The practical test is the last step before authorization to drive. The evaluation considers maneuvers, vehicle control and safe driving. The approval releases the issuance of the Driving Permit (PPD).

7. Issuance of the PPD and access to digital qualification

After approval, the provisional document, valid for one year, is available on the CNH do Brasil application. The digital version of the license can be downloaded by following the steps:

  • Access the “View Qualification” tab
  • Select “Download CNH-e”.
  • This way it is saved in your application and present it whenever necessary, as it has the same legal validity as the printed version.
