Stellantis has started the electrification of its national line with the 12-volt mild hybrid along with the 1.0 turbo. The next step will be the 48-volt mild hybrid system with the 1.3 turbo, which will debut in the 2027 Jeep Renegade and will be extended to Commander, Compass, Fiat Toro, Pulse Abarth and Fastback Abarth.

Its higher voltage means that it will be more active, and can bring a greater reduction in consumption. AutoPapo caught the 48-volt mild hybrid Jeep Commander running tests on the streets of Belo Horizonte.

Along with the novelty was a unit of the current line, without electrification, for comparative purposes. Although the bodywork is completely camouflaged, the car will have no aesthetic changes, just a new emblem.

According to the Autos Segredos portal, the Jeep Commander 2027 will have the Longitude Hybrid, Limited Hybrid and Overland Hybrid versions equipped with this engine. The Blackhawk’s 20 turbo engine will become flex, while the Overland 2.2 diesel will have no changes.

How the Jeep Commander’s 48-volt mild hybrid works

According to Autos Segredos, Stellantis will not use the dual-clutch transmission in its 48-volt mild hybrids made in Brazil. They will keep the current six-speed Aisin automatic gearbox.

The 1.3 turbo engine will swap the alternator and starter motor for a multifunction device. This component has an electric motor that can generate 28 hp and 5,6 kgfm, delivered directly to the crankshaft.

The multifunctional device starts the 1.3 turbo faster than the starter, regenerates energy with deceleration and assists the combustion engine by giving additional power. The 12-volt mild hybrid system of the 1.0 turbo does the same, but in the 48-volt the gains are more felt.

Another difference is in the battery of the hybrid system. As the name implies, it is 48 volts and has 0.9 kWh capacity. It will be under the driver’s seat.

The dual-clutch transmission that was discarded for Brazil has an electric motor inside. With this, he can keep the car moving with the combustion engine off. This function did not exist in national models with the conventional automatic gearbox.

As it was in the Fiat Pulse, the Fastback and the Peugeot models, the price of the Jeep Commander mild hybrid is not expected to grow much. This simpler electrification comes to help adapt cars to the new emission standards.

Drivers will benefit from improved consumption, something that has always been criticized in the 1.3 turbo. In some states they will be exempt from IPVA and in the city of São Paulo (SP) the car will be exempt from IPVA.
