Coming from sports cars and luxury cars, this type of paint began to appear on more affordable national cars
Innovations and trends in the automotive world are born in luxury cars and eventually reach the most affordable models. Matte paint began to be used on cars with the BMW M3 in 2010.
The first national car with matte paint was the Volkswagen T-Cross Extreme, launched in 2025, and was joined in the same year by the GWM Haval H9. Soon we will have another car with this finish, which is the Renault Koleos E-Tech.

This type of finish reacts differently to light and also enhances the lines of the cars more. Creases and curves that can be disguised by shine are more evident, but the public’s taste for it is not unanimous.
Matte paint requires some special care when washing, to maintain the original finish. But its base is not so different from that used in cars with a glossy finish.

The process of painting the matte car starts the same as a common one, even the paint is the same. The matte finish comes from the varnish that is applied in the final stages. It provides the same protection as a glossy varnish.
Matte painting can also be done outside the factory. Alcidene Cardoso, Koria’s Application Consulting manager, points out that the workshop needs to be equipped with a well-insulated cabin with advanced filtration, to prevent external factors from hindering the result.
Matte painting has difficulty correcting imperfections”, explains Alcidene.
The painting work with this finish needs to be meticulous, as it does not accept polishing and other types of corrections. While the glossy finish gives room for repairs.
Matte paint has the advantage of being more resistant to scratches. But this plays against when there is damage, the repair may require repainting the part.

Manufacturers who sell cars with matte paint also teach the correct maintenance of it. Some additional care is needed and certain traditional habits are avoided.
Let’s start with what not to do: both Volkswagen and GWM are emphatic about not using wax in paint. In the manual of the Haval H9 there is still an addendum explaining that if this material is used accidentally, it must be removed immediately with a silicone removal product.
Both manufacturers also suggest not using those automated car washes with brushes. The bristles can damage the paint with scratches.
GWM also adds that it is not recommended to wash frequently or in direct sunlight. This can result in a brighter paint job or an uneven finish.
The manufacturers’ recommendations are that the owner wash the car manually, using a soft sponge, neutral detergent and water. It is not to use excessive force when scrubbing the car.
Dirt impregnated in the bodywork, such as insects, feces, mud and others must be softened or removed with plenty of water or with a pressure washer.
In general, the care of matte paint cars requires more avoiding products and processes that are made to give shine. It is also necessary to be quick to remove greasy dirt, such as resins and greases, so as not to stain.
If you are one of those who think the matte car is beautiful, it is best to prepare yourself to take proper care.
