When it was thought that the world’s largest fair dedicated to consumer electronics, CES 2026, which ended last January 9 in Las Vegas (USA), would continue to put electric vehicles in the position of greatest interest, that is, in the front seats, these were moved to the back seat. Figurative language was the headline of Automotive News (AN), a century-old American publication specializing in automobiles.

“Robotaxis, worker robots, assisted driving systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI) resources. integrated vehicles dominated car issues at this year’s CES, taking electric vehicles out of the spotlight,” AN wrote.

Losses of electric cars

The economic picture is worrying. GM had a 43% drop in electric sales in the fourth quarter of 2025 over the same period in 2024. The financial loss was US$ 7.6 billion (R$ 41 billion). Additional costs may be recorded in 2026. An all-new electric delivery van was scrapped due to low demand and the end of tax incentives.

At Ford the situation is similar. Last year alone, it suffered a loss of US$ 5 billion (R$ 27 billion) with electric vehicles. In North America, it will replace a van of this type with hybrid and gasoline models. It has also ruled out the production of an electric van in Europe, but will keep hybrid versions. However, it announced a strategic partnership with Renault to develop commercial and passenger electric vehicles.

Delays in electric cars

Short-term losses do not mean, on both sides of the North Atlantic, that electric vehicles are ruled out, but that there will be delays. On the other hand, different types of hybrids (semi-hybrids, full hybrids and plug-ins) tend to advance. Extended-range electric vehicles, with internal combustion motor-generator (ICE) to recharge a smaller and cheaper battery, tend to arouse increasing interest.

This solution removes the anxiety of searching for rechargers on the road and wasting time on trips. And also buy an electric car for urban use and a conventional vehicle to go on vacation, on holidays or for work.
