Despite having a very loyal audience, Toyota’s conservatism can play against it in more competitive segments. The new Yaris Cross arrived in the hottest price range on the market and can’t fool around if you want to repeat the success of the Corolla and Corolla Cross.

The positive points have already been listed here, with the brand betting on its good reputation and the hybrid system to differentiate itself. Now let’s talk about where the Yaris Cross steps on the ball.

1. Dated look

Does this little face look familiar? It uses the brand’s old visual identity

Toyota inaugurated a new visual identity in 2022 with the current generation of the Crown. The national Yaris Cross was presented in Asia in 2023 still with the old style, inspired by the 2018 RAV4, the 2019 Highlander and the Corolla Cross before the face-lift.

Inside this is more evident, with the large frame in the multimedia center and the large gear lever. The advantage of this is having several buttons in the cabin to command the vehicle’s functions, with the screen only taking care of the sound and navigation system.

2. Termination

Unlike some direct rivals, Toyota’s model does not have soft-touch

The upper segment of compact SUVs, positioned between R$ 150 thousand and R$ 200 thousand, has models with a finish similar to that of medium cars. Honda HR-V and Nissan Kicks have soft-touch on the dashboard and doors, while the Jeep Renegade has this care only on the dashboard.

The Toyota Yaris Cross uses hard plastic on these surfaces, with a vinyl strip in the center of the dashboard and at the base of the console. The doors are covered only on the front handles, without the fabric on the sides.

3. Trunk

The hybrid version loses 9 liters and has a volume of 391 l

Compact SUVs have taken the role of being the family car from sedans, station wagons and minivans. Therefore, a bulky trunk is a positive thing for the public.

The Toyota Yaris Cross in the combustion-only versions has a trunk of 400 liters, the hybrid model has 391 l of volume. It is little more than some hatchbacks and is in the negative average of the segment, there are rivals with 450 liters or more.

4. Performance

The 1.5 engine can suffocate with the car loaded

Compact SUV is not meant to be sporty, but it needs to serve a family safely. The 1.5-liter engine with 122 hp and the hybrid with 111 hp are the weakest in the segment.

Only with the driver the performance is ok, but with passengers and suitcases it starts to complicate. Another aggravating factor is not having a stronger alternative as there is in rivals Honda HR-V, Volkswagen T-Cross and Hyundai Creta.

5. Autonomy

The small tank plays against when fueled with ethanol

The Japanese were never adept at large tanks in their compact cars. The combustion Yaris Cross can take only 42 liters of fuel, while the hybrid model has a volume of 36 liters.

The car is economical with gasoline, with a range that can reach 601 km in the model without electrification on the road. The hybrid travels 644 km in the city with gasoline. However, with ethanol these numbers drop and supplies are more frequent.
