New documents revealed by the US Department of Justice shed light on the closeness between Elon Musk and financier Jeffrey Epstein — the billionaire convicted of running a child prostitution ring in the US. Files that were made public this week reveal an email exchange between 2012 and 2013, in which Musk and Epstein discuss the logistics for a visit by Musk to Epstein’s private island and an invitation for the criminal to visit the SpaceX rocket factory in California.

The content of the messages contrasts with past statements by the Tesla CEO, who has always downplayed his relationship with Epstein. While the documents do not confirm whether the trips actually took place, they detail the active planning of the meetings.

Helicopter and the search for “romance”

In one of the exchanges, dated October 2012, Musk asks Epstein what would be the “wildest” day of the week to be on Little St. James Island. Faced with the answer, the billionaire commented that “the world needs more romance”. To facilitate the trip, Epstein offered his private helicopter to pick up Musk and his then-wife, actress Talulah Riley, on the neighboring island of St. Barths.

In return, Musk extended a formal invitation for Epstein to visit SpaceX’s facilities. “You are welcome to see the rocket factory at any time,” Musk wrote. Publicly, the businessman denies having set foot on the island. In 2019, he even tweeted that he had never been there, calling the insinuation false.

The commercial connection via SolarCity

In addition to social interaction, the emails show commercial ties. Epstein has expressed interest in hiring SolarCity — a solar energy company founded by Musk’s cousins, Peter and Lyndon Rive — to electrify his Caribbean island and ranch in New Mexico.

Musk acted as a direct intermediary, forwarding Epstein’s demands to his cousins and questioning the technical feasibility of the project. The release of these files meets a requirement of US federal law, after criticism about the government’s slowness in exposing the network of contacts of the financier, who died in prison in 2019.
