WEG announces energy storage plant in Itajaí (SC), with R$ 280 million from BNDES and scheduled to start in 2027
WEG announced the construction of a battery energy storage systems (BESS) factory in Itajaí. The project, which may become the largest of its kind in the country, will have financing of about R$ 280 million from BNDES.
The unit will have a capacity of up to 2 GWh per year, equivalent to approximately 400 5 MWh systems, with start-up scheduled for the second half of 2027. The plant should operate with a high level of automation and a structure focused on testing and development.

The production will be destined to stationary energy storage, used to stabilize electricity grids and expand the integration of renewable sources, such as solar and wind, especially after the regulatory auctions promoted by the federal government.
Although it does not involve batteries for electric vehicles, the project has indirect effects on electrification by expanding the storage capacity of the electric system. The factory should also incorporate integration technologies such as the cell-to-pack architecture.
The investment is part of the context of the expansion of renewable energy in the country. In the short term, the impact on the automotive sector is limited, but the initiative contributes to the development of the industrial chain linked to storage and electrification.
