Volkswagen has declared the end of numerical nomenclature on its electric models, and the current ID.4 will be called VW ID.Tiguan. This change follows the restyling of the vehicle scheduled for this year.

The information was confirmed by the European press and the IG Metall union during a press conference at the Emden plant in Germany. Despite the confirmation made directly by the metalworkers’ union, Volkswagen has not yet made a public announcement about the future of the SUV.

It is not the first time that the automaker has renamed a vehicle for the same reason. During the Munich Motor Show, VW renamed the ID.2all model to ID.Polo. This change is a way to recover Volkswagen’s emotional ties with the consumer, by bringing back established names such as Tiguan and Golf.

The ID.Tiguan will not only receive the new name for nostalgia, but will also have its design revitalized to resemble the original Tiguan. Abandoning the standard rounding of the ID line and adopting a bolder and straighter look, the model now refers to the brand’s traditional utilities, which makes it even more appealing to the public. With the new design, the ID.Tiguan positions itself in the opposite way to the combustion Tiguan in the market.

The car will also undergo changes in the industrial sector. Currently, the model is manufactured at the Zwickau plant in Germany, but will have its activities gradually closed. According to the union, the ID.Tiguan will focus on the Emden assembly line, with a cycle scheduled until 2031. This is a strategy related to the unification of VW’s production, indicating that the classic names still remain relevant in the electric era.

The change is also welcome with regard to improvements in design and internal ergonomics, as well as advances in the multimedia system and finish. There is no official data on changes in the vehicle’s engine; However, an evolution in this sector is expected, especially in the face of the advance of Chinese vehicles in an increasingly competitive market.
