Exclusive model for China has a 1.5 engine that works only as a generator and versions with up to 510 hp of power
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed, on Wednesday (8), the final specifications of the Volkswagen ID. Era 9X. The new large SUV is the German automaker’s bet to contain the advance of local brands, positioning itself as a direct competitor to the Aito M8, a model developed by Huawei in partnership with Seres.
The result of the joint venture between Volkswagen and SAIC, the vehicle adopts range extender technology (EREV). Unlike conventional hybrids, the 1.5 turbo combustion engine under the hood does not drive the wheels, serving exclusively as an energy generator for the batteries, which power the electric propulsions.

With a length of 5.2 meters and a wheelbase of 3.07 meters, the ID. Era 9X is a monocoque focused on urban comfort for up to six occupants, moving away from off-road pretensions. The model will be offered in rear-wheel drive (295 hp) and all-wheel drive (510 hp) versions.
Volkswagen will offer two battery packs: a 51.1 kWh LFP, with an electric range of 267 km, and a 65.2 kWh NMC ternary, which brings the purely electric range to up to 340 km. Adding the capacity of the fuel tank, the total range should be around 1,000 km.
Aesthetically, the SUV maintains the visual identity of the concept presented in Shanghai, including a LiDAR sensor on the roof and a closed front grille with active air intakes. The model also adopts retractable door handles to improve aerodynamics.
This last item, however, imposes an engineering challenge to the brand: China is considering banning recessed door handles from 2027 for safety reasons in rescues. If the legislation advances, Volkswagen will need to update the design of the ID. It was 9X shortly after its launch, scheduled to take place in 2026.
