Target of memes, bilingual signage for COP15 passed through a company and city hall inspection without anyone noticing the Portuguese error
The City Hall of Campo Grande (MS) became the target of criticism and irony on social networks after the installation of a tourist signpost with a gross spelling error. The totem, placed to guide delegations at COP15 — an international biodiversity conference that takes place in the capital in March 2026 — spelled the word “conventions” with the letter “s”.
The signage is located on Avenida Ana Rosa Castilho Ocampo, in Jardim Montevideo, in one of the main accesses to Parque dos Poderes. The carelessness in “Convention Center” [sic] went unnoticed by the manufacturing process, the installation team and the municipal inspection itself, but it did not escape the watchful eye of the residents, who quickly went viral with the image.

The failure takes on contours of irony because the municipal administration itself recently used the official social networks to celebrate the modernization of urban signage. The project foresees the installation of bilingual signs on strategic roads, presented as an advance in the infrastructure to receive foreign participants. However, the “business card” ended up exposing the fragility in the processes of reviewing public services.
Netizens did not spare satirical comments, questioning whether the error was a reflection of the haste in the delivery of the works or a simple lack of consultation of the dictionary. For critics of the administration, the episode compromises the image of the city, which seeks to consolidate itself as the headquarters of major global forums.
In a note to the local press, the Municipal Transport Agency (Agetran) informed that it will send a technical team to the site to verify the “inconsistencies”. The agency assured that, if the irregularity is confirmed, the correction will be provided as soon as possible with the responsible company. So far, the sign remains in place.
