Rivian, the American manufacturer of electric vehicles, has found an unusual way to demonstrate the versatility of its commercial platform. In an unprecedented partnership with the ABC television network, the automaker has developed a fully functional and customized electric ambulance to integrate the mechanical cast of the long-running medical series Grey’s Anatomy. The project uses the basis of the “Rivian Commercial Van” — a model originally known by Amazon’s delivery fleets — to create a fictitious rescue unit, but with real engineering.

The initiative goes beyond inserting products into the scene in the fashion of traditional merchan : the vehicle was designed by a mixed team of Rivian designers and set designers from the series to operate as a “studio on wheels”. Thus, unlike a real ambulance, which prioritizes medical ergonomics, this model has modular panels and removable walls.

This hybrid architecture allows production to film complex internal scenes without the need to build separate static sets (the so-called bucks), speeding up the shooting schedule and allowing moving shots with greater realism.

From a strategic standpoint, the stock serves as a public laboratory for Rivian. By placing its commercial platform in one of the most watched programs on TV worldwide, the brand signals to the market that its vans can be adapted for various purposes beyond delivery logistics, such as emergency services and service utilities. However, the company points out that the model is, for now, a conceptual design exercise: there is no forecast of serial production or sale of electric ambulances to real hospitals in the short term.
