Brazilian federal highways registered an unprecedented volume of disrespect for traffic laws in 2025. According to the annual balance released by the Federal Highway Police, 10,277,088 violations of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) were recorded, setting a new historical record. The number represents a significant jump compared to the previous year, when 9,534,233 infraction notices were added.

The survey reflects the tightening of enforcement, which focuses on reducing lethality on the roads, but exposes the persistence of recklessness. In the approaches, the technical rigor of the police officers falls on safety items, state of conservation of the vehicle and documentation, but it is the behavior of the driver that generates the most alarming numbers.

At the top of the ranking of irregularities, speeding remains unbeatable, adding up to more than 6 million records. Right behind is overtaking in a continuous lane – a maneuver responsible for most fatal head-on collisions – with more than 195 thousand flagrant. The list of recurring infractions is completed by non-use of seat belts, expired licensing and vehicles in poor condition.

Geographically, recklessness has a certain address: the BR-101, BR-116 and BR-381 highways concentrate the largest volume of fines. The Rio de Janeiro stretch of BR-101 and the São Paulo stretch of BR-116 (Dutra/Régis Bittencourt) lead the state statistics, with Rio de Janeiro adding 220 thousand flagrant and São Paulo surpassing the mark of 131 thousand infractions in these corridors.

Another piece of data that raises the alert is the combination of alcohol and driving. In 2025, the PRF carried out more than 3.5 million breathalyzer tests. The “fine-tooth comb” resulted in 51 thousand fines and the arrest of 3,643 drivers for the crime of drunk driving. In all, the 2025 operation inspected more than 4.6 million vehicles and approached 5.4 million people throughout the national territory.
