The accident occurred under adverse weather conditions, in a stretch known for its high accident rate due to the altitude and winding route. According to information from the newspaper El Comercio, the technical expertise identified braking marks that reinforce the theory of speeding. Three aides who accompanied the politician survived because they were wearing restraint equipment, although they suffered serious injuries and remain hospitalized in Ayacucho.

Balvin Huamani, mayor of Pilpichaca and one of the first authorities to arrive at the scene, confirmed that the candidate’s body was found meters away from the twisted chassis of the Hilux. The National Elections Court (JNE) lamented the loss and highlighted that road safety during the campaign period is a growing concern in the country.
Becerra’s death changes the electoral board for the April 12 election. The candidate occupied the bottom of the polls in a pulverized dispute between 30 candidates. With the death, the PTE is expected to announce in the coming days whether it will keep the ticket with the vice president or withdraw the candidacy, at a time of isolated leadership of Rafael López Aliaga (Popular Renewal) in the opinion polls.
