A 35-year-old man, who had one of his legs amputated as a result of a previous accident, was arrested in flagrante delicto last Friday (13) after driving a car with a manual transmission without the mandatory adaptations, running over a motorcyclist and causing collisions in sequence in the interior of Ceará. In addition to the vehicular irregularities, the driver was severely intoxicated.

The case occurred in the municipality of Tianguá. According to the Federal Highway Police, a team was traveling to attend to an occurrence at km 310 of the highway when they came across the confusion, a kilometer earlier. On the banks of km 309, the agents found a damaged vehicle immobilized by mechanical failures, already surrounded by people.

When cordoning off the area and starting the preliminary investigation, the PRF found that the driver had run over the driver of a motorcycle and collided with other cars before his own vehicle stopped working. What most caught the attention of the authorities, however, was the physical condition of the man behind the wheel.

Even with the absence of one of his lower limbs, he operated a car with a traditional clutch and gearbox, contrary to safety standards for People with Disabilities (PwD). The breathalyzer test dispelled any doubts about the driver’s condition: the equipment measured 1.17 milligrams of alcohol per liter of alveolar air. The rate is alarming, representing more than three times the limit of 0.34 mg/l, the threshold from which the infraction is typified as a traffic crime.

After the procedures at the scene, the driver received an arrest warrant and was sent to the Tianguá Civil Police Station. He must answer for serious bodily injury while driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and for trying to leave the scene of the accident without providing help.
