BMW is working on redefining its sports division with the development of the high-performance version of the Neue Klasse platform. The future sedan, the spiritual successor to the current M3, will bet on a radical configuration of four electric motors — one for each wheel — managed by a new centralized software architecture, named by the brand Heart of Joy .

Unlike current systems, which separate engine control and stability, this new ECU unifies chassis and propulsion management. In practice, this makes it possible to modulate torque in milliseconds independently on each wheel. The system is capable of decoupling the front axle on demand, offering the purist rear-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive with extremely precise torque vectoring.

To withstand the rigor of track use, BMW will not use the same batteries as common models. The sports car will have a unique cell chemistry and an improved cooling system, mounted on an 800-volt architecture. The goal is to ensure that maximum power delivery is constant, without the performance degradation common in electric cars when the battery heats up.

The construction also marks a break with the recent past. The battery box becomes part of the chassis structure, increasing torsional rigidity. In addition, the brand is replacing the famous carbon fiber (CFRP) with natural fiber composites and recycled materials, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of production by 40%.

While the conventional version of the Neue Klasse sedan is expected to go into production in Munich in 2026, the high-performance variant of the M division is expected to hit the global market only in 2027, positioning itself as the technological apex of the automaker’s new phase.
