The National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) made official, through the new Brazilian Manual of Vehicle Driving Exams, the end of the beacon as an isolated and eliminatory stage for obtaining the National Driver’s License (CNH). The measure, valid for the entire national territory, is part of a package of changes that includes the release of cars with automatic transmission and the flexibility of the scoring system, whose tolerance limit rose from three to ten points.

According to the agency, the objective is to end the “mechanical ritual” of the current exams. The parking maneuver continues to exist, but it will only be required at the end of the route on public roads, as a natural stopping action, without the millimetric rigor and psychological pressure of the closed stage between cones.

The new text prioritizes the evaluation of the candidate in real traffic situations. The examiners will focus on the ability to read the environment, make decisions and live safely with pedestrians and cyclists, to the detriment of the repetition of memorized movements.

The failure criterion was also softened. Infractions that do not generate a direct safety risk, such as “letting the engine go out”, no longer cause automatic elimination. Now, errors are counted in a new ceiling of ten points. The immediate interruption of the exam will be restricted to cases in which the evaluator identifies a total lack of control of the vehicle or emotional lack of control that compromises road safety.

Automatic transmission released

Another old demand met by the manual is the official permission for the use of vehicles with automatic transmission in the practical exam. The change recognizes the evolution of the Brazilian fleet and eliminates the obligation to master the clutch for those who intend to drive only vehicles without the left pedal.

“We want less staging and more reality”, summarized the national secretary of Traffic, Adrualdo Catão, about the philosophy of the new document. The implementation of the rules will be overseen by the state Detrans, which must adapt their procedures to ensure that driving schools prepare new drivers for real traffic, and not just to pass the test.
