Model approved by the Chinese government bets on imposing size and autonomous systems to compete with European rivals
The post of the largest electric SUV in China has a new owner. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has officially registered the Nio ES9, a model that arrives to lead the brand’s portfolio and surpasses the dimensions of any rival in the local market, positioning itself in the ultra-luxury segment.
The measures are the main highlight of the project. At 5.37 meters long, 2.03 m wide and an impressive 3.25 m wheelbase, the ES9 is larger than the British Rolls-Royce Cullinan. The size surpasses the brand’s old top-of-the-line, the ES8, and allows for interior space configurations similar to those of a limousine.

The design follows the technological function: the roof adopts the “watchtower” arrangement, integrating central LiDAR sensor and high-definition cameras for autonomous driving systems. The clean look includes matrix headlights, retractable door handles and the option of 23-inch Ferris wheels to balance the rugged silhouette.

Active safety has been reinforced with solid-state LiDAR sensors in the fenders, focused on eliminating blind spots. At the rear, the visual identity is maintained with linear taillights that cross the trunk lid and hidden wipers.
The mechanics deliver super sports car numbers: two electric motors add up to 697 hp of power and 71,4 kgfm of torque, taking the giant SUV to a maximum of 220 km/h. The 102 kWh battery, supplied by CATL, is compatible with Nio’s quick-change system, which replaces the discharged component in about three minutes.
