Detran-SP, in partnership with automakers Honda and Stellantis, started an unprecedented recall project for vehicles collected in yards in the state. The initiative aims to carry out critical repairs on seized cars before they return to circulation or are destined for auctions. The management model has already aroused the interest of other manufacturers to join the program.

The task force focuses primarily on Takata’s airbags. The component has a serious defect: in the event of a collision, the inflator can rupture and project metal fragments against the driver and passengers, which has already caused deaths in Brazil. Unlike the traditional recall, where the owner takes the car to the dealership, in this modality the repair is carried out directly at the warehouses.

Honda started the project with the goal of repairing 272 vehicles located in 21 yards in Greater São Paulo. Previously, a pilot stage in the region of Campinas had already recovered 51 units that returned to circulation regularized. Stellantis — a group that owns brands such as Fiat and Jeep — works in the cross-referencing of data for the regularization of 1,194 vehicles, 732 of which are concentrated in the capital and metropolitan region.

According to the DMV-SP, the objective is to ensure road safety and the usability of vehicles that would be returned or sold with serious safety issues. The strategy eliminates a hidden danger for future auction buyers and ensures that maintenance is up to date, regardless of how long the car is downtime. The expectation is that the partnership model will reduce the liability of unattended recalls in the state, which still reaches significant numbers.
