General Motors this week made official a new milestone for the North American automotive industry. In validation tests carried out in the state of Michigan, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X recorded a mark of 1.68 seconds in acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h, establishing itself as the fastest production car ever manufactured in the United States.

The performance puts the super sports car ahead of global engineering icons, surpassing models that cost millions of dollars, such as the Bugatti Tourbillon, the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut and the Pininfarina Battista. In addition to the explosive exit, the ZR1X completed the quarter-mile (402 meters) in 8.675 seconds, crossing the finish line at a speed of 256 km/h.

According to the automaker, the numbers were obtained without engineering “tricks” or track preparations. The model used the ECU map homologated for the 50 US states, the factory standard aerodynamics, regular gas station gasoline and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. GM pointed out that, even on surfaces not prepared with the VHT grip compound, the car maintained acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h below 1.9 seconds.

Equipped with the ZTK performance package and carbon fibre wheels, the ZR1X represents a significant technical leap over the current generation C8. For comparison, the conventional ZR1 completes the 0 to 100 km/h test in 2.3 seconds, while the E-Ray hybrid model takes 2.5 seconds.

In the global scenario of production cars, the only rival that has higher numbers — by a minimal margin — is the electric Rimac Nevera R, valued at more than R$ 12 million. The Corvette ZR1X, in turn, hits the market with a suggested price of US$ 209.700 (approximately R$ 1,12 million in direct conversion), democratizing a level of performance previously restricted to hypercars of very limited production.
