China overtakes Japan to take global lead in auto sales

Chinese automakers end two decades of Japanese hegemony and project 27 million vehicles sold in 2025

After 20 years of reign at the top of the automotive sector’s sales, Japanese automakers pass the title to Chinese manufacturers, which have been leading the new car sales market since the beginning of 2025.

With an advantage of more than 2 million vehicles sold over Japan, China becomes the world leader in sales, considering the accumulated of eleven months of the year. However, the general trend is for the country to remain the leader and at the top of sales, with an estimated total of 27 million vehicles.

Of the 27 million, 70% of this total corresponds to Chinese cars sold domestically, with the BYD and Geely brands leading the sector among the top ten global automakers, driven by the continued growth of Chinese exports.

In markets outside the Chinese axis, the country’s cars were exported to several countries and continents, especially Southeast Asia, with about 500 thousand vehicles sold; Europe, with 2.3 million, in addition to a significant increase in the African and South American markets, with 230 thousand vehicles (up 32%) and 540 thousand vehicles (up 33%), respectively.
