Chevrolet calls for ‘recall recall’ for Blazer EV for brake failure

Error in parts catalog caused dealerships to install incorrect component in previous repair, generating risk of short circuit

General Motors has confirmed a new recall for the Chevrolet Blazer EV, covering units from the 2024 and 2025 model years. The recall, although restricted to a small batch of vehicles, draws attention due to the nature of the failure: it is an error derived from a previous recall that was poorly executed. The problem affects the rear parking brake wiring harness, creating safety hazards ranging from system inoperability to unintentional wheel lockup.

According to the safety report sent to the NHTSA (US transit agency), the origin of the defect dates back to a recall carried out in the middle of last year. At the time, a failure in the automaker’s Electronic Parts Catalog misled dealerships, allowing the ordering and installation of an electrical harness outside the design specifications.

The technical analysis revealed that the incorrect component has an inappropriate length for the installation path in the chassis of the electric SUV. This divergence causes the wires to be excessively tensioned or subject to constant bending during suspension movement and normal use of the vehicle.

The physical consequence of this error is premature fatigue of the material. Wear and tear can break the insulation or the wire itself, leading to short circuits. In practice, the driver may face situations where the electronic handbrake does not disengage, preventing the exit, or, in more serious cases, is improperly activated with the car in motion.

At this stage, the recall affects 20 specific units in the United States: 15 2024 models (produced between July 2023 and March 2024) and five 2025 models (manufactured between September and October 2024). GM says it has no record of accidents or injuries associated with the failure so far.

The owners of the affected units will begin to be notified from March 9. The corrective procedure at dealerships will involve completely replacing the harness with an upgraded version, which includes an abrasion protection tape to eliminate future hazards.
