Rise in battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids contrasts with drop in combustion models in the European market
New passenger car registrations in Europe grew 4.8% year-on-year and totaled 1,088,275 units in October 2025, considering the 28 main markets on the continent. Germany, Spain and Poland were the countries that contributed the most to the increase in volume, according to data from JATO Dynamics released in the second half of December.

In the period, battery electric vehicles (BEV) totaled 224,351 registrations, an increase of 33% compared to October of the previous year, raising the share of this type of motorization to 20.6%. Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) registered a growth of 41%, with 117,240 units, reaching 10.8% of market share.
Vehicles with internal combustion engines dropped 17%, with 348,794 units registered and a share reduced to 32.1%. Despite the advance of electric vehicles, BEVs continue to be the third best-selling type of engine in Europe, behind combustion models and mild hybrids, according to Daniele Minsteri, senior consultant at JATO Dynamics.
During the year, BYD was the brand with the highest market share growth, reaching 1.3% after adding 102,000 registrations compared to the same period in 2024. Cupra achieved a 2.2% share, while Škoda advanced to 6.3%.
Among models, the Tesla Model Y maintained the leadership among electric vehicles year-to-date, with about 115,000 units. In October, the Škoda Elroq was the best-selling BEV, with 11,441 registrations, adding up to almost 71 thousand units in the year. The Renault 5 closed the month with 9,539 registrations. In 2025, MG approached 250 thousand registrations, surpassing Nissan and Fiat in the European market.
